Coolant is one of the least discussed and most consequential fluids on a generator. It protects against freezing, raises the boiling point, and carries the corrosion inhibitor package that keeps the engine’s internal passages and the radiator in good condition. Get the concentration wrong in either direction and you trade one failure mode for another.
What buyers should know first: more antifreeze is not better. A solution that is too rich in glycol actually transfers heat less effectively and can cause its own problems, while a weak solution may not protect against freezing or corrosion.

What the concentration actually controls
Freeze protection
The obvious one. A colder site needs a higher glycol proportion, but the relationship is not linear and the practical limit matters, so the target should be stated as a temperature rather than a ratio.
Boil protection
A pressurised system with the correct mix raises the boiling point, which preserves margin at high ambient temperatures and at altitude.
Corrosion inhibition
The inhibitor package protects the metals in the circuit: the block, the head, the radiator and any heat exchanger. This is a consumable. It depletes with time and with operating hours and has to be monitored, not assumed.
Water quality: the part that gets overlooked
The glycol is supplied as a concentrate to be mixed with water, and the quality of that water matters. Dissolved minerals contribute to scale and deposits; chlorides can be aggressive to some metals. Where site water quality is poor or unknown, the sensible approach is to specify the mixing water rather than use whatever is available.

Procurement checklist
- State the lowest ambient temperature the set will sit in, including when shut down.
- Ask what coolant the engine manufacturer specifies for the model, and whether the set ships filled.

- Ask what mixing water quality is required.
- Ask for the recommended inhibitor test method, interval, and replacement interval.
- Ask for the coolant specification in the handover documentation, not just the operator manual.

What to put in the RFQ
Include the minimum site temperature, the maximum ambient operating temperature, and the site altitude if it is significant. FAQ
Can we just use a 50/50 mix everywhere?
It is a common default, but the right answer depends on the lowest temperature the set will see. Ask for a target protection temperature and check the delivered fill against it.
Does coolant need testing if the set rarely runs?
Yes. Inhibitor depletion is a function of time as well as running hours, which is why standby sets need a time-based test interval.
Can we top up with water?
Topping up with water dilutes the mix and changes the protection. Ask what the supplier recommends for top-ups and keep premix available if that is the answer.
Is coolant the same across all generator models?
No. Engine platforms differ and some have specific requirements or exclusions. Ask for the specification for your model rather than assuming.
Should coolant be part of the maintenance contract?
Usually yes, because testing and replacement are scheduled work. Confirm whether it is included or priced separately.
