It is cheap to get right at design time and expensive to fix on site. This guide covers the limit and the field

What buyers should know first

Back pressure is the resistance the engine pushes its exhaust against. Too much of it and the turbo works harder,
exhaust gas temperature rises, power drops, and component life falls. The number that matters is the pressure
at the engine exhaust flange, not at the muffler outlet.

Always use the engine manufacturer’s figure — that is the binding specification, not a generic
rule. The generating-set standard ISO 8528 does not set the limit; the engine does.

What raises back pressure

  • Pipe length — longer runs add resistance.
  • Bends — each 90° elbow counts as a length of straight pipe (often the biggest hidden contributor).
  • Muffler grade — residential and critical-grade silencers attenuate more but flow less than an
    industrial (straight-through) silencer.
  • Pipe diameter — undersized pipe is the classic mistake on retrofits.

Common configuration mistakes

  • Choosing the quietest muffler without checking the resulting back pressure against the engine limit.
  • Adding elbows for routing convenience and forgetting their equivalent length.
  • Measuring pressure at the tailpipe instead of the flange, which hides the real load on the turbo.
