Regardless of your destination country, these certifications form the baseline for any diesel generator export transaction:
ISO 9001:2015 — Quality Management System
This certifies that the manufacturer has a documented quality management system covering production processes, inspection procedures, and corrective actions. It tells the buyer that the factory does not just build generators and hope for the best — they follow consistent, audited processes.
Tesla Power holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, audited annually by an accredited certification body. Any legitimate China generator manufacturer should be able to provide their certificate upon request. If they cannot, walk away.
CE Marking — European Conformity
Required for the European Union, EEA, and widely recognized in Africa and Asia. CE marking declares that the generator meets EU safety, health, and environmental protection requirements. It covers electrical safety (Low Voltage Directive), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC Directive), and environmental requirements.
Critical detail: The CE certificate must be issued to the manufacturer (the factory), not to a trading company. A trading company cannot legally hold a CE certificate for products they did not manufacture. If a supplier’s CE certificate shows a different company name, the certificate is invalid for their products.
ISO 14001:2015 — Environmental Management
Increasingly required by international development banks and EPC contractors. This certifies that the manufacturer manages environmental impacts systematically — waste disposal, emissions, energy use. Not legally required for import in most countries, but it opens doors for funded projects.
Third-Party Inspection Reports

Engine Emissions Certifications
Increasingly important for all markets, emissions certifications determine whether the generator can legally operate:
- EPA Tier 3 / Tier 4 Final (US): Required for generators sold into the United States and some US-funded projects abroad. Tier 4 Final requires DPF and SCR aftertreatment, significantly increasing cost

How to Verify a Supplier’s Certifications

- Cross-reference the certificate number with the issuing body’s online database. Most certification bodies publish a directory of valid certificates
- Check the certificate scope. The product scope must specifically include “diesel generator sets” or equivalent. A certificate for “electrical equipment” is too broad to be meaningful
- Verify the factory address. The certificate should list the exact manufacturing facility. If the address does not match the factory you are dealing with, the certificate may not apply
- Check the expiry date. ISO and CE certificates are typically valid for 3 years with annual surveillance audits. An expired certificate provides no assurance
- Request the audit report. A legitimate manufacturer will share their most recent audit report summary upon request

Q1: Can I use a CE certificate from a different manufacturer?
No. CE certificates are specific to the manufacturer and product. A CE certificate held by Company A cannot be used for generators produced by Company B, even if the products are similar. Each manufacturer must obtain their own CE certification for their specific products.
Q2: How long does it take to obtain country-specific certificates?
Typically 5–30 business days depending on the country and certification type. Tesla Power recommends initiating the certification process 4–6 weeks before the planned shipment date. We coordinate directly with certification bodies and provide all required technical documentation.
Q3: What happens if my generator arrives without the correct certification?
Customs will likely refuse clearance. Your options are: (1) ship the unit back at your expense, (2) obtain the missing certificate from the origin country (difficult and time-consuming), or (3) abandon the shipment. This is exactly why pre-shipment verification is critical.
Q4: Do generators need annual re-certification?
The generator itself does not need re-certification after import. However, some countries require annual emissions testing for operating generators (not standby units). The manufacturer’s certifications (ISO, CE) need periodic renewal, but that is the manufacturer’s responsibility, not the buyer’s.
